John "the Blind" of Luxembourg was King of Bohemia from 1310 to 1346. He allied with France in the Hundred Years War, and despite his blindness, led his own forces at the Battle of Crecy (1346). According to the chronicler Jean Froissart, upon hearing that the battle was almost lost, he instructed his officers: "I require you bring me so far forward, that I may strike one stroke with my sword." They did so, and he was slain on the battlefield.
